Poitín was first distilled by Monks in Ireland around 600 years ago and the process was kept very secret. Not so long ago, poitín was illegal in Ireland, but when I was a child, our next door neighbor made it in his shed!
The aroma is a mixed blend of orchard fruits and hedgerow berries. These were only added to pointin to reduce the harsh taste of the almost pure alcohol.
